SHAKOPEE MDEWAKANTON SIOUX COMMUNITY | Bring History to Life

Get your students out of the classroom with a guided tour of Hoċokata Ti’s public exhibit, Mdewakanton: Dwellers of the Spirit Lake. Sit within a traditional Dakota tipi, touch the hides of animals traditionally hunted by the Dakota people, and more.

The Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community (SMSC) owns and operates Hoċokata Ti, the tribe’s cultural center and gathering space. It features a 3,850-square-foot public exhibit, Mdewakanton: Dwellers of the Spirit Lake, that provides visitors with a cultural experience to enhance their knowledge and understanding of the Mdewakanton Dakota people and their history.

Whether guests prefer to explore the exhibit on their own or desire a group guided tour, Mdewakanton: Dwellers of the Spirit Lake will provide guests with a traditional Mdewakanton Dakota experience unlike any other.

Interested in getting your students out of the classroom? Bring history to life and let one of our professional cultural interpreters guide your group through the exhibit as they provide insight into the meaning behind the displays and artifacts. Our immersive and interactive exhibit gives students a better understanding of Mdewakanton lifeways that can’t be experienced through books. Plan your visit by filling out our request form at hocokatati.org/group-field-trips.
