HISTORICAL EXPERIENCES | End of an Unpopular War

2023 marks the 50th anniversary of the last American troops to be pulled out of Vietnam, ending what was up to that time, America’s longest war. Learn the who, what, when, where, why of one of America’s most controversial wars. Drama and multi-media will bring this history to life for students!

The presenter is Mr. Arn Kind, a teacher of 40 years, who will come in the authentic uniform of an American G.I. serving in Vietnam.
2018 was the 50th anniversary of the TET OFFENSIVE during the Vietnam War. Even though it was a major defeat for the Communist forces, it was a turning point in the conflict because it turned a large portion of the American public against the war.
Controversy continues to swirl around America’s involvement in the Vietnam conflict. Who were the Vietnamese and what was their fight all about? How did the United States get into the war? What were the strategic, diplomatic and domestic factors that determined the way we fought the war? The Vietnam War was, at that time, the longest in American history. It cost the nation 58,000 lives (including 1.077 Minnesotans), 300,000 wounded, 1,200 missing in action, and $141 billion. Unlike previous wars where returning GIs came home to a grateful nation, Vietnam veterans were at best ignored and at worst shunned and sometimes persecuted for their service. Many years would pass before Americans would show their appreciation for the sacrifices made by these veterans, finally reversing the shameful treatment they previously had endured.

This multimedia presentation will use power-point, video, music, drama, role-playing and living history experiences, to give us an understanding of this turbulent time and make history come alive for us. Mr. Kind will describe the increasing commitment of each of five American presidents, the rising antiwar protests at home and eventual U.S. withdrawal from Vietnam, and the lingering tragic effects of a war that had never been declared.

One of the reasons Mr. Kind’s presentation really makes this history come alive for his audiences is because of his realistic and colorful portrayal of the people who participated in this conflict. Another reason is because of the maps, posters, clothing and artifacts he brings and displays for his audience to see. In order to display and use these artifacts in his presentation, he makes sure that everything he brings in has been made safe. Mr. Kind will wear the uniform of a typical “Grunt” in the war, describing the soldiers’ experience, showing some of the arms and equipment used during the conflict. Mr. Kind, of course, does not bring any gunpowder or any other combustibles into the schools, libraries, or any of the venues where he presents. Weapons of the war are non-firing reproductions that are safe to handle and display.

This presentation as a wonderful and unique way to learn about this interesting and controversial period in the history of our nation and our world.
