The Hull Rust/Mahoning Mine is a wonder 125 years in the making. At 8 miles long, east to west, and 3.5 miles wide, north to south and 500+ feet deep at its deepest spot, it is the largest open pit iron ore mine in the world. The mine is still operating today and was formed from nearly 40 separate properties to become what it is today. More than 1.4 billion tons of ore have been mined in this one location and this one mine provided 25% of the ore used during World War II. Ore productions began here in 1892 and continue to this day. In 1918, ore was discovered underneath the Village of Hibbing and the entire town was moved 2 miles south of its original location so the ore beneath could be mined. Six blocks of the original townsite are now part of the mine, but some streets and building foundations from the original village can be seen today. The Mine View is open on weekends through October 10:00 a.m. to 3 p.m., weather permitting. There is no an admission fee, but donations are always appreciated. After viewing the mine, visit the Hibbing Tourist Center to shop for local items and souvenirs of your visit to the Mine View and Hibbing.
